National Weather Service confirms EF0 tornado touched down in Wayne County

After a heavy dose of severe storms in Northeast Ohio on Tuesday, the National Weather Service has confirmed a tornado touched down in Wayne County.

According to NWS data, the tornado was an EF0 that touched down in Apple Creek at 9:56 p.m. It had an estimated peak wind of 85 mph. Officials say the brief tornado came down just west of Honeytown Road and moved east along three residential properties before lifting east.

“Damage along the path included several uprooted and snapped trees, with some large branches impaled into the ground, indicating strong localized winds,” the NWS reported.

Spotters noted that a carport awning was lifted and pushed across a home, knocking down a TV antenna and causing a chimney to collapse onto the roof.

“Additional impacts included a blown-down fence, as well as roof damage and damage to an external propane tank at another residence,” the NWS added.

No injuries or fatalities were reported.

Earlier on Wednesday, the NWS announced that it was sending a team to Apple Creek to survey the damage for possible tornadoes.

3News previously reported that the South Central Fire District responded to a Wayne County home in the 5700 block of South Honeytown Road after a tree fell.
