Severe weather hits Scotts Valley: Recovery efforts are underway following a tornado that touched down in the area, leaving five people injured. Crews are actively working to restore power and clear roads affected by the tornado’s destructive path.

The day after powerful winds swept through the Bay Area and a tornado struck Scotts Valley, teams were still engaged in restoring electricity to thousands of residents, reopening roads, and addressing other damage. In Scotts Valley, where the tornado overturned vehicles and brought down power lines on Saturday afternoon, the Scotts Valley Police Department announced that power has been fully restored and all roads are now open, thanks to crews who worked throughout the night.

Reports indicate that five individuals sustained injuries, three of whom required transport to a medical facility, with one needing to be admitted for further treatment. Fortunately, no fatalities have been reported.

“We would like to take this opportunity to express our gratitude to the community for its patience, understanding, and cooperation during this challenging and impactful situation. We recognize the significant disruptions caused, and your support throughout this process has been immensely appreciated,” stated the police department in a press release. “The team effort from everyone involved demonstrates the strength and resilience of this community and those who serve it.”

The tornado carved a path of destruction along Mount Hermon Road and around the Scotts Valley Shopping Center, lasting for approximately five minutes, starting at 1:39 p.m., as reported by the National Weather Service. The tornado received a rating of 1 on the Enhanced Fujita Scale, which is the second lowest of six levels, with estimated wind gusts reaching around 90 miles per hour.

A tornado warning was also issued for San Francisco for the first time in the city’s history, occurring at 5:54 a.m. on Saturday and lifted about 20 minutes later. The National Weather Service notes that California averages about 11 tornadoes annually, with occurrences typically seen in the northern half of the Central Valley during spring and fall.

Heavy rain and strong winds impacted various parts of the region. Flooding led to road closures in Belmont and Livermore for several hours, while thousands remained without power on Sunday afternoon due to downed lines.

As of Sunday afternoon, PG&E was working to restore power to 4,060 customers in Marin County, 2,895 in San Mateo County, 2,793 in Santa Cruz County, 1,157 in Santa Clara County, along with additional outages in San Francisco and the East Bay.

Power outages on Sunday resulted in traffic delays in Walnut Creek on Ygnacio Valley Road at Lennon Lane, and BART services were temporarily suspended between the Coliseum and Oakland Airport stations. A minor coastal flood warning for areas surrounding the San Francisco and San Pablo bays has been in effect since Thursday and will continue until 1 p.m. on Monday.

Looking ahead to the start of the week, light rain and temperatures in the mid-50s are forecasted for much of the Bay Area. “We’re certainly not anticipating conditions similar to what we experienced over the weekend,” commented National Weather Service Meteorologist Nicole Sarment. “Winds may reach up to 30 miles per hour close to the coast, but will not compare to the extreme weather from this weekend.”
